Dr. Dongyoun Lee is a professor of the Department of Dermatology at Samsung Medical Center, Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Korea. He is one of founders of Asian Dermatopathology Society. He graduated from Seoul National University (M.D., Ph.D.) and completed his dermatology residency and fellowship at the Seoul National University Hospital. In 2004, he received the International Board of Dermatopathology. His strong interests are melanoma, nail disorders, and dermatopathology. Every year since 2001 he has seen more than 500 foreign patients coming from abroad at the international health services of Samsung Medical Center. He has been publishing many articles including around 240 English-written articles. Among his works, he found the presence of specialized mesenchymal cells in the nail unit for the first time and named them onychofibroblasts in 2006. In addition, he defined specialized nail mesenchyme in the nail unit and proposed to call it onychodermis in 2012. Very recently, he further demonstrated transcriptional similarities between the onychodermis and follicular dermal papilla. He has been invited to several international dermatology meetings such as World Congress of Dermatology, International Society for Dermatopathology, American Academy of Dermatology, Asian Dermatological Congress, Asian Dermatopathology Society, etc. As a clinical dermatologist, he has focused on skin cancer, nail, hair, vitiligo and dermatopathology. His strong interests are melanoma, nail disorders and dermatopathology. Every year since 2001 he has seen more than 500 foreign patients coming from abroad at international health services of Samsung Medical Center. In addition, he has been doing skin research. He has been publishing many articles including around 200 English-written articles concerning skin research and clinical dermatology. His 3 papers appeared on the cover of Modern Pathology and Journal of Cutaneous Pathology. Among his works, he found the presence of specialized mesenchymal cells in the nail unit for the first time and named them as onychofibroblasts. In addition, he defined specialized nail mesenchyme in the nail unit and proposed to call it onychodermis. Very recently, he further defined the presence of nail matrix onychodermis (onychomatricodermis), which may be the nail counterpart of follicular dermal papilla. He has been invited to several international dermatology meetings such as World Congress of Dermatology, American Academy of Dermatology (5 times including March 2019), Japanese Dermatology Association, Japanese Society of Investigative Dermatology meetings and etc.
